Projects in Goa
In Goa, we have been working on various projects in the Zari slums that are adjacent to the campus. These include Shiksha, School Adoption Programme, Self Help Groups, Operation Clean Zari. Apart from regular projects we take up activities like blood donation camps, collection and donation of old clothes to orphanages etc. A brief description of the projects is given below. For more informaion please refer to our newsletters.
1.Shiksha:
Shiksha is an initiative of Nirmaan-Goa, started with a vision to help the underprivileged students gain free access to quality education. It involves providing coaching to the students of 5th standard in the government schools for the Admission Test of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are top class high schools , run by central government which provides free education to poor students untill 12th class. For the year 2009-10, Government High School, Zuarinagar was chosen for the implementation of the project. A team of 14 volunteers visited Zuarinagar everyday to coach the students for the entrance test. The response has been very encouraging both from the students and their families.
2.School Adoption Programme(SAP):
The aim of SAP is to convert backward rural and urban Government schools into Model Schools in 3 years of time so that they are on par with the best run city schools in terms of infrastructure and performance. The government middle school, Zuarinagar was chosen for adoption by Nirmaan with a time bound and objective specific plan to transform this school into a model school. Also GYAN BODH was started under SAP to teach students basic concepts of science. Under this program, technological innovations are used in educating the students in government schools.
3.Self Help Groups(SHG):
SHGs are formed to create a platform for the rural women to earn a livelihood by forming a self-sustainable group which through self help and mutual help prepare products and market them. The women of SHG in Zari are working on embroidery products and paperbags. These are marketed in campus stores as well as in the nearby cities. The SHG of paperbags is a joint venture with CEL-BITS,Goa. Apart from the handicrafts and paperbags, candle-making SHG is being started this year in August.
4.Operation Clean Zari:
This aims at making the residents aware of cleanliness measures and its merits to make it a better place to live. We plan to acheive this by conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns. With the help of the local municipality, bigger dumpsters will be installed to replace the present ones to meet the needs of the community.Also a solid-waste management project is planned to be carried out in three phases
