Our administrators selected a village named "POTHAYAPALLI", an underdeveloped village about 5 km from our college, where there is a Govt primary school having strength around 70 students and an ANGANVAADI school of strength 28 students. Most of the people in that village are daily labourers, who did not have any idea about importance of education of their children. Even though there are some educated people, their children are studying in other private schools. NIRMAAN of our campus divided the volunteers into teams, who have their specific work like the 'community development' is to create social awareness in those people, 'IGNITE' is for educating dropouts and finally coming to my team SAP(school adoption program) is struggling about basic needs of that primary school and problems of students who are studying in that school.

We go to pothayapalli almost every Sunday. Before making a visit, every team usually conduct their own meeting to discuss about what they are going to do in that visit. We discussed with school headmaster and teachers about their needs for school and students. We noticed two important problems which are water problem and garbage(dump yard).

What we have doneWe took classes to those students who belong upto 5th class, wherever they had backlogs in each subject. On 26th January we distributed sweets to the kids in anganvadi and even in primary school. We gave each one of them some pencils, erasers and sharpeners, which they were in need of.

What we are going to do: We are going to create awareness about "dumping the garbage" among the people who are staying near the school, and we planned to provide an 100mts pipeline connecting to an overhead tank near the school and putting pots and dustbins in every classroom. We also planned to give a First aid kit to the school. We planned to do all these by the end of this march.

Future Plans: Since we have started this program in the middle of this academic year we did not provide them any teaching modules. We planned to arrange them in coming June.

This program is also running successfully as the other programs running by NIRMAAN of BPHC.

It has been almost 2 years at Nirmaan and I don't have enough words to explain the journey. In these two years, I saw hope, courage, endeavor, passion and selflessness. I saw all these through Nirmaan, in the people of this country, in fellow volunteers, and now in myself. To be precise, I feel more complete as an individual. I feel I am one of those responsible citizens of this country.

2 years ago, I had no thoughts about Nation building, changing the society. I was more into myself, my life, my career and of course fun. And then came Nirmaan. The memories of the summer meeting (Annual General body Meeting 2010, July 24 -25) are engraved deep inside my heart. That was for the 1st time, I saw passion, selflessness and hope. A day spent with Mayur, Rajesh and other leaders of Nirmaan truly left a long-lasting impression and instilled inspiration in me. That was the moment I thought “It’s time to join the movement!

I came back to Goa in high spirits and the team here welcomed me with a smile! I worked with the executive committee for the next one year and we all joined hands to make the operations at Goa more sustainable and effective. In this one year, in the leadership of Kunjan Gandhi, I learned some of the most important lessons of my life. Working at the grassroot projects in the slums of Zari gave me insights about SHGs, Education sector and Community development. Driven by the hope in the eyes of the SHG women and the school kids, we worked out on various models in employment and education. At the same time, the Nirmaan Goa team gelled well and now is a strong passionate team! This one year gave me exposure to the real world, and sensitized me to work for a better Nation. I committed myself to work for a better society, to make the country a better place to live!

The next phase of transformation came in Bangalore, the place where I did my PS-2. A 6 month journey with Rakesh and Sagar. Also this was the time I worked for the central team of Nirmaan. During this period, I saw a different aspect of the country, Politics! Although I read about contemporary issues in the country, I never really dwelled into this topic. Rakesh and Sagar together gave me a total exposure to the Indian Political System the leaders and the policies. We had innumerable discussions about good governance, developmental politics. All these certainly gave me more insights about the country and its prospects. I realized that youth empowerment and good governance is the way out!

All in all, Nirmaan gave me every opportunity to learn, to grow, to prove myself and to be the change! It has been a total transformation. It's certainly my time to give back to the Organization, to give back to the Society. I thank Snehith for introducing Nirmaan to me, Kunjan for being a constant inspiration and motivation, Rajesh, Rakesh, Sagar, Mayur and Sridhar for constantly guiding me.

My teaching experience at Gyan Bodh.

Once I was teaching Linear Equations in Two Variables to a student. He was messing it up. He was adding x variable to y and vice versa. Then I was struck by this idea and I taught him as follows...

I asked him to recall any two  brands of chocolates, say some S and T. Next I told him that he already has 3S + 4T and I give him 2S + 3T more. He immediately replied that he had 5S + 7T now. I now told him to review what he had actually done (he added brand S to S and T to T). That means he added the SAME quantities... which is the gyst of the whole mathematics that whatever operation you perform you can perform it only on SIMILAR quantities or things...
Now I turned to brand X and brand Y. Then slowly to just X and Y. Now he was able to both and subtract the equations. Though this was nothing very special but still I learnt a new thing that day, "CONNECT". IT'S NOT JUST A WORD. It is something greater than that...just connect whatever you are teaching to his daily experience and he understood it all..
That day itself I applied my newly formed " THEORY" to testing!!!!!
Next I was to tell him how to subtract 4 from 3
i.e. 3 - 4 = -1
and it worked... what I just did was I connected  "-"  (minus sign) with loan or debt(UDHAAR) and the kid got the concept within 4 minutes and 5 examples.
That was the time I felt yes I did something differently and it worked...

As a part of Joy of Giving Week 2011, 21 we Nirmaanites and students of BITS – Pilani Goa campus visited an old age home “Our Home” at Bogmalo. Located next to the scenic beach, the home has 55 inmates including a few mentally ill patients.  Initially, most of them found some sense of relief by speaking out their stories. We started asking about their health and well being after getting acquainted. While many of them were happy to have the strange visitors coming forward to spend time with them, some were mentally ill to accept us. It was inspiring to see a paralyzed aged women making handicrafts. While managing the daily chores is itself a difficult task at such an age, the inmates showed keen interest on improving their artistic talents. Joseph gets all the medicine needed for his fellow patients himself from faraway places. Mona spends most of her time with her Bible and novels. While Maria gazes at the pleasant Bogmalo, you hear some soothing music from the stereo system. Fatima, another old woman in the home hardly sounded aged as she made us all laugh with her talks. In spite of their age and physical condition the people put in all possible efforts to stay lively and happy. Some of the old clothes collected during the Joy of Giving Week were also donated to the home. The residents were very happy about the visit and asked us to visit again

As one of the many events of the Joy Of Giving Week, Nirmaan organized two visits, one to an orphanage and other to an old age home. About 17 people went to the Old age home “Our Home” in Bogmallo. The visit was of a few hours but it left a lasting impression on all of us.

As we entered we first met the nurse, a jolly woman, she has been looking after them since 3 years without any complaints. She is an epitome of selflessness. With a smile she welcomed us all. We divided ourselves into groups and went ahead to explore the two floors and interact with the people who stayed there.

Our initial enthusiasm turned into a whole different feeling when we talked more to them and realized their tragic plight. It was so hard to believe that people you care for abandon you one day with nowhere to go. It was so painful to see some of them disillusioned with life with no faith left even in god. Read more...
